Is Progenitus the right Commander for you?
Is Progenitus the right Commander for you?
Now if you read my article: 'Top 5 hydra Commanders' you'll know I ranked Progenitus at #2.
This was probably the hardest decision I had to make when writing the article. Progenitus is already a tried and true commander, with a huge fan base...and for good reason.

He's a monster!
Now while Progenitus is very hard to cast, there are benefits to running him as your commander even if you never manage to bring him out. The first benefit being access to every color. While his casting cost is by far his biggest downside, it's also one of his biggest strengths when choosing him.
Now, it's a known fact that by adding colors to your decks you are adding options and therefore adding power. The obvious downside is a lack of consistency within your deck.
Another downside of Progenitus is that consistency is expensive...or at least it can be.
Now if you've read any of my other posts you may have guessed that I love Green. And oh look! Progenitus has green in his mana cost, which gives you access to green!
What does Green give you access to?
Green is packed with cheap cards that not only ramp, but also act as any color mana you want. These cards can come in the form of enchantments, creatures, sorceries, and instants. If you want to save a buck and still manage to get Progenitus out early, this is the route I'd personally take. Which brings me to my next topic.
How do you win with Progenitus?
Well, I've seen several methods. The most popular method is resolving Progenitus, and boosting his power and giving him double-strike. If you are able to give Progenitus even one point of extra power, double-strike makes him hit for instant lethal.
This method is as strong as any, provided you manage to survive long enough to cast him. That brings me to my next strategy, which fits nicely with the reliance on Green from earlier.
If you decide to rely on Green, you can not only filter your mana and ramp at the same time, but you will also gain access to the most 'Fog' like effects in all of the colors. Utilizing a 'Turbo Fog' strategy can be very powerful (albeit a bit boring for some players). This can ensure your survival from most decks, and when you're finally ready to finish off your opponents, green also provides you with the best pump spells of all 5 colors too.
So whether you go the budget route and use green to fuel Progenitus's hunger for mana, or if you go all out and give him the most efficient mana base money can buy, chances are once you resolve this commander you're opponents aren't going to last much longer.

But there is a way around this potentially expensive mana base!
