Top 5 Legendary Hydra Commanders
Also
There are only 5 legendary hydras in all of magic.
Crazy...I know.
However, all of them are very different and can be game-changing cards...in their own way.
So let's start with the weakest of the five.

Now for you fans of Ulsht, I am by no means saying he's weak. Obviously, there's huge potential in dedicated tokens or weenie builds. The faster and bigger you build your board presence the more bang for your buck you're gonna get from Ulsht.
I might even put him higher if it wasn't for the mana cost associated with his activated ability. Without that he'd be akin to Walking Balista (another very powerful card, though sadly not a hydra)

4.
Gyrus, Waker of Corpses
Gyrus is awesome. No matter when you play him he'll be relevant. I see a mix of graveyard strategies and ETB triggers to be powerful tools in a Gyrus deck.
In all honesty, he probably deserves to be higher on the list, but the next on the list is my personal commander.
3.
Polukranos, World Eater
For such an imposing name you kinda expect a bigger body. But a 5/5 for 4 is nothing to sneeze at. I know some of you may be thinking:
How is this guy higher on the list than the last two? You can only use his ability once. There's potential for him to die in the exchange. It's not even a real fight mechanic...its worse. What are you thinking?!
What I'm thinking is how I use Polukranos. In nearly all my Hydra decks I have some form of ramp package...usually an aggressive one. Obviously, the more mana you have the stronger Polukranos becomes, as is the case with most hydras. But I also make sure to incorporate death touch. By doing so I almost guarantee a one-sided board wipe, and with Polukranos's relatively low CMC, I can do it several times throughout the game.
This alone is reason enough for me to put him above Gyrus and Ulsht, who have no defense against such a tactic. But it doesn't put him above #'s 1 and 2.

Progenitus
This is probably the most well known Hydra Commanders. He's one of the most well-known Commanders period. If Progenitus manages to resolve you're opponents generally have one turn to save themselves.
Progenitus is nearly unstoppable, and because he gives access to every color, you aren't bound by any of the color limitations your opponents have to deal with.
1.
Gargos, Vicious Watcher
Gargos is the only true Hydra lord in existence. While he has a defined ceiling unlike the first three on this list, and isn't quite as powerful as Progenitus...he is an 8/7 for 6.
I already mentioned how a 5/5 for 4 is good. An 8/7 for 6 is unreal. His efficiency is incredible.
Gargos has most of Polukranos's strengths but none of his weaknesses
He's arguably more efficient. He has a true fight mechanic that works both defensively and offensively. And he reduces the cost of all incoming hydras!

As much as I love Polukranos, Gargos outshines him in nearly every way, as well as all the other hydras...
Maybe not Progenitus...but a 3GGG casting cost is much easier than
WWUUBBRRGG...yea good luck with that. Hence, Gargos takes the #1 spot as the best Hydra Commander to date!
