Is Progenitus the right Commander for you? Now if you read my article: 'Top 5 hydra Commanders' you'll know I ranked Progenitus at #2. This was probably the hardest decision I had to make when writing the article. Progenitus is already a tried and true commander, with a huge fan base...and for good reason. He's a monster! Now while Progenitus is very hard to cast, there are benefits to running him as your commander even if you never manage to bring him out. The first benefit being access to every color. While his casting cost is by far his biggest downside, it's also one of his biggest strengths when choosing him.  Now, it's a known fact that by adding colors to your decks you are adding options and therefore adding power. The obvious downside is a lack of consistency within your deck. Another downside of Progenitus is that consistency is expensive...or at least it can be. But there is a way around this potentially expensive mana base!...

Polukranos, World Eater

Image
Is Polukranos, World Eater the right commander for you? Here are some pro's and con's of using Polukranos, World Eater as your commander. As well as a deck-building strategy to maximize his effectiveness.  Lore:  Polukranos, is a hydra native to the plane of Theros. He once lived as a celestial but fell from the sky during a battle between the gods. He was slain by Elspeth, the sun god's champion. Learn More Pro's 1. Efficient: Polukranos provides a great value for the cost. At only a cost of 2GG, he provides you with a solid 5/5 body.  2. Easy Mana Base As with all mono-colored commander's, what you sacrifice in options you gain as consistency. While a multi-colored commander may provide you with more options, and therefore more power, you run the risk of being inconsistent. The more colors, the more inconsistent. Polukranos may only have one color, but that just means he's good at what he does...really good.  3. He has ...

Ulasht, the Hate Seed

Is Ulasht, the Hate Seed the right Commander for you? Let's go over some of his pro's and cons as well as look at a deck-building strategy to maximize Ulasht's effectiveness  Lore: Who is Ulasht? Ulasht is a special type of hydra. He is a Hydra, but he is also a Hellion. He resides in the ruins of Ravnica and is revered by the Grull clans as the: "Embodiment of destruction and mindless rage."-MTG Wiki Pros: 1. Color Combination : While some might not consider this a boon. Green and Red have a lot in common in terms of power. Both rely on strength to settle disputes more often than not. With green's natural ability to produce strong creatures, and Red's ability to enhance those monsters to their limits, this color combination can make even the smallest minion into a deadly beast. 2. Flexibility: Ulasht's ability to come down effectively on turn four is a strength amongst other hydras. Most hydras have 'X' in their c...

Top 5 Legendary Hydra Commanders

Image
Top 5 Hydra Commanders  Also There are only 5 legendary hydras in all of magic. Crazy...I know. However, all of them are very different and can be game-changing cards...in their own way. So let's start with the weakest of the five. *Disclaimer: The following page contains affiliate links. If you click on one of these links and decide to make a purchase, then at no cost to you I will make a small commission. 5. Ulsht, the Hate Seed. Now for you fans of Ulsht, I am by no means saying he's weak. Obviously, there's huge potential in dedicated tokens or weenie builds. The faster and bigger you build your board presence the more bang for your buck you're gonna get from Ulsht. I might even put him higher if it wasn't for the mana cost associated with his activated ability. Without that he'd be akin to Walking Balista (another very powerful card, though sadly not a hydra) Read about this Hydra in detail here! 4. Gy...

Top 3 Mono-Green Hydras and Budget Replacements

Image
Hydras have often been positioned to be one of Green's great late-game bombs. While there are definitely some crazy powerful hydras that don't fall into mono-green (Looking at you Hydroid Krasis ) three of the most powerful and consistent hydras all fall neatly into their iconic color. That being said, I've found that any hydra, if built around, can become a nearly unstoppable force in the right decks. But...there are those hydra's that require...less support. The first of those Hydras being: 1. Primordial Hydra Primordial Hydra is the definition of a late-game bomb but has the flexibility to play it early if you need a target for your opponent's removal. Even if you do play the creature early, in just a few turns it becomes a late-game threat all by itself. Now in the modern format where deck prices can reach the thousands, Primordial Hydra might not seem like a huge investment. But at a Market price of over$10.00, a playset of this card i...

Welcome to Planeswalking with hydras

Image
Howdy! I'm an avid magic the gathering player. I've played since I was nine years old. Early on in my planeswalker career I primarily focused on developing humans. No...that's not right. Human armies...that's it. For years I tested and tested to find the perfect balance of creatures, spells, and mana. I was almost always exclusively mono-white. Until I did it. I brewed a tier two deck. This deck was a mono-white tokens deck, that closely resembled the black and white lingering souls decks of the time. However, it was much more powerful and half the cost. I would consistently go 3 out of 4 in most of my modern Friday Night Magic (FNM)tournaments. But what I found most satisfying was the ability to beat decks that were in the quadruple digit range. This became my new goal. Defeating opponents who had invested way more money into this hobby than I had. My next big achievement actually occurred in the Standard format. There I consistently defeated the premi...
